Fulton Montgomery Community College
The visual communications technology program at Fulton-Montgomery Community College (FM) provided for me the finest and most economical college degree I ever earned. It also endowed me with a solid foundation as a professional communicator.I can’t count the number of times this foundation of knowledge exceeded whatIlearnedin advanced curriculumsat higher level institutions!Visual Communications Technology program was best at teaching me hands-on experience with its cutting edge lab and graphic arts technologies. Digital media changed rapidly and repeatedly since my graduation in 1999, and what I took away from the lab assignments, which allowed for individual creativity and experimentation in electronic media and traditional print mediums, put me ahead of others in the career field. The program’s graphic arts and electronic media design courses integrated communication theory and design principles extremely well. Today, my knowledge from them remains a valuable standard, nearly 10 years afterward. I can honestly say I would not be where I am today if it were not for these courses. What especially made the program so successful for me were the instructors. I believe they are the most knowledgeable, caring and generally fun professors, anywhere. To me, the college’s general education instructors in Math and English also remain second-to-none.In the years since FM, I have earned my bachelors degree in technical communications and have progressed into a rewarding career in journalism and public affairs. Today, I am a writer and graphic designer for the Department of Defense in Washington DC. My future remains andexciting and open to new possibilities. It all started with a drive past the FM campus and my first steps across the campus grounds towards that associate’s degree in visual communications technology. It’s a degree I wouldnot trade with any other institution.NOTE: Mike Smith works for the National Guard Bureau in Washington, DC. He has traveled around the world in his career including trips to Iraq, South Africa, Greenland and Germany as a journalist, photographer, editor and public affairs specialist. He was twice awarded Outstanding Writer of the Year by the National Guard, and he has placed in national competition for photojournalism and layout and design.
